THE POPE'S RESIGNATION. FROM POWER-PRIVILEDGE OF THE CHARISMATIC LEADER TO THE TRANSIENT POWER-SERVICE

The media will flood us with news, comments and speculations about the Pope's resignation announced today 'urbi et orbi'. Gradually thereafter, the topic of the election of the new Pope will take over the news and the discorse on television. At first, it is difficult to describe the nature, the content and reach of the historical action taken by Benedict XVI. The sensation for those of us who have had the priviledge of withnessing the II Vatican Council is the importance of this epocal transition of the Catholic Church. Actually, it is really premature judging Benedict XVI's action. We are living an historical cojuncture when the power of the Pope, traditionally considered life-long power-privilege, is transformed into a time-limited (transient) power-service. This is worthwhile for more in depth considerations. We clearly recall on the day of his election, Pope Benedict XVI defined himself "a simple and humble labourer in the vineyard of the Lord". Yesterday, his Twitt told us something humane, more humane: "@Pontifex: We must trust in the mighty power of God’s mercy. We are all sinners, but His grace transforms us and makes us new." Those who have lived already for over half a Century may be experiencing feelings as after the great novelty of the II Vatican Council called by Pope John XXIII. In less than a Century, the Catholic Church has endured two choices that have changed its presence and role in the millenary history we have known and we are knowing. The time-limited (transient) 'power-service' replaces the 'power-priviledge' entrusted to a charismatic Leader and represents the real change demanded in all areas where power of a man over men is exercised. In politics, this need is emerging and expanding. What has recently happened in the Countries overlooking the Mediterranean Sea has been too the breaking of the immutable power of dictatorships, dynasties and nepotism of charismatic leaders. DIMISSIONI DEL PAPA: DAL POTERE-PRIVILEGIO DEL CAPO CARISMATICO AL POTERE-SERVIZIO DI DURATA LIMITATA La cronaca ci inonderà di notizie, commenti e congetture sulle dimissioni del Papa oggi annunciate urbi et orbi. Poi, pian piano, tutta la vicenda della elezione del nuovo Papa riempirà di notizie i giornali e le trasmissioni televisive. A caldo riesce difficile descrivere la natura, il contenuto e la portata del gesto storico compiuto da Benedetto XVI. La sensazione che stiamo vivendo, specialmente tutti quelli che abbiamo avuto il privilegio di assistere ad un altro avvenimento storico, il Concilio Vaticano Secondo, ci fa sentire l'importanza di questo passaggio epocale della Chiesa cattolica. È veramente prematuro dare giudizi sul gesto di Benedetto XVI. Stiamo vivendo un passaggio storico in cui il potere del Papa, considerato tradizionalmente un potere-privilegio a vita, si trasforma in un potere-servizio limitato nel tempo. Un passaggio epocale deciso da un intellettuale che è forse uno dei più preparati e autorevoli in campo filosofico e teologico. Sarebbe da approfondire questa considerazione. Ricordiamo tutti perfettamente quando, nel giorno della sua elezione, si autodefinì un operaio per coltivare la vigna del Signore. E ieri il suo ultimo twitter ci dice qualcosa di umano, di molto umano: "Dobbiamo avere fiducia nella potenza della misericordia di Dio. Noi siamo tutti peccatori, ma la Sua grazia ci trasforma e ci rende nuovi." Chi ha vissuto più di mezzo secolo non può non avere la stessa sensazione che si ebbe, di fronte alla grande novità del Concilio Vaticano Secondo convocato da Giovanni XXIII. In meno di un secolo, la Chiesa Cattolica ha compiuto due scelte che hanno cambiato la sua presenza e il suo ruolo nella millenaria storia che abbiamo conosciuto e stiamo conoscendo. Il potere-servizio limitato nella durata che sostituisce il potere-privilegio affidato ad un Capo carismatico, è il vero cambiamento esigito in tutti i campi in cui si esercita il potere dell'uomo sull'uomo. Nel campo politico questa esigenza sta emergendo e si sta diffondendo. Quello che è accaduto nei Paesi che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo è stato anche una rottura con il potere immutabile legato alle dittature, alle dinastie e al nepotismo di capi carismatici. E' presto per allargare la riflessione, ma emerge in modo forte e chiaro che qualsiasi incarico di potere è temporaneo. Roma 11 Febbraio 2013 Antonio Pileggi
